I’ve always thought that if anybody else had written this, it would seem like a skillful imitation of Mendelssohn that’s undone by being too much like Mendelssohn. It’s as though someone tried to cram every single aspect of Mendelssohn’s style into a single work—it’s overkill. That said, I love it.
